Newport softball fans, parents and coaches have said the Cubs have lived by the “long ball” this season and that proved true Wednesday in an OSAA 4A State Softball playoff game for visiting Marshfield at Yaquina View Elementary School. The Cubs hit three home runs in an 8-4 win over the Lady Pirates. The Newport win also avenged an earlier lost to Marshfield in Coos Bay to open the season March 17, 6-2. The No. 10 Lady Pirates finish 18-8, while the No. 7 Cubs move on to the quarter-final round to face No. 2 Scappoose, an 11-1 (6) winner over Yamhill-Carlton. Far West League champion Douglas won its first round game at home over Crook Co., 8-5. The No. 8 Trojans travel to No. 1, and defending state champion, McLoughlin of Milton-Freewater The FWL’s No. 3 team, South Umpqua, lost at No. 3 Banks 12-3.

The Far West League was ousted from the OSAA 4A State Baseball playoffs Wednesday with first round losses by all three post season teams. League champ and No. 5 seed North Bend was upset by No. 12 Astoria 7-6 at Clyde Allen Field in North Bend. The FWL’s No. 2 team, South Umpqua lost 6-5 (8) at No. 2 Banks. The league’s No. 3 team Brookings-Harbor lost 12-0 at No. 1 Henley south of Klamath Falls.
