Marshfield won the 4A Far West League boys’ basketball No. 1 seed Monday night with a 54-43 win over Sutherlin at Coquille High School. The two teams were co-champions of the league this season, but the Pirates won the tie-breaker to earn a playoff game at home and a chance to advance to the OSAA State 4A Tournament at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis March 7-9. The two teams were tied at 11 after one, but the Pirates (15-10) outscored the Bulldogs (18-6) 16-10 in the second to stake out a 27-21 lead at the half. Marshfield again put more points on the board than Sutherlin in the third (13-7) and cruised into the final eight minutes with a 40-28 advantage. Sophomore Justin Cooper scored 17-points, while classmate Jake Miles had 12. Other Pirate scorers: Hunter Olson with eight, Austin Howerton five, Rylee Trendell four, three each for Juan Caballero and Kody Dean, and two-points for Ty Bunnell.

Regional Wrestling
Marshfield wrestling Coach Travis Wittlake was honored by his peers Saturday at the conclusion of the 4A District 3 Regional Wrestling Championships at Phoenix High School in Southern Oregon. The Pirate coach was named Regional Coach of the Year. His Marshfield team placed fourth as seven individuals qualified for the state championships this weekend in Portland.
