On December 20, 2016 at about 11:55PM, an Oregon State Police Trooper stopped a northbound 2002 Buick on Interstate 5 near MP 281 (near Wilsonville) for a lane use violation. The trooper engaged the occupants in conversation during the stop. The statements made were suspicious which led the trooper to other observations of possible criminal conduct. The trooper searched the vehicle which resulted in the discovery of 55 pounds of marijuana and $1800 in cash. The trooper concluded the marijuana had come from out of state based upon statements and other evidence. The driver, Irving D BEAL, age 69, of New York, NY was arrested for Unlawful Import or Export of Marijuana Greater than 16 ounces. His passenger, James C STATZER, age 50, of Buchanan, MI, was also arrested for the same crime. They were transported to the OSP — Portland Area Command, cited and released. Unlawful Import or Export of Marijuana Greater than 16 ounces (ORS 475B.185) is a Class C Felony. In Oregon an individual over 21 years of age may possess up to one ounce of recreational marijuana outside their home. It is unlawful to import or export marijuana to/from Oregon.
