Douglas halted North Bend’s five-game winning streak Friday with a 4A Far West League softball sweep at North Bend. The two wins, 10-4 & 9-8, keep the Trojans on top of the league standings (7-1) with two-weeks remaining in the regular season. The Bulldogs (5-4) are fourth. South Umpqua (7-2) is second after sweeping Siuslaw (1-8) in Florence, 10-3, 6-0. Marshfield (6-3) is third after taking two at Brookings-Harbor (0-8), 8-7 & 9-7. The Lady Pirates finish with series against North Bend and Douglas. North Bend has the Pirates this week and Siuslaw the following week. South Umpqua has Douglas and then Brookings-Harbor. Douglas gets South Umpqua, followed by Marshfield.

Douglas handed 4A Farwest League baseball leader North Bend (8-1) its first loss of the league season Friday, 3-0, at Winston. The Bulldogs took the second game 7-4. South Umpqua (5-3) is second with two-weeks remaining in the regular season. The Lancers swept visiting Siuslaw 13-3 & 13-0 (5). Douglas (5-4) is third. Brookings-Harbor (4-5) completed a sweep of Marshfield, 5-2, 7-5 in Coos Bay to move into fourth. The Pirates (3-6) are fifth, followed by Siuslaw (1-7). North Bend has two series remaining in the regular season, Marshfield and then Siuslaw. The Pirates have the Bulldogs and then Trojans.

Marshfield’s Zach Kellar sprinted to the second fasted time in the state for 4A 200 meters Saturday at the 68th Annual Grants Pass Rotary Invitational. The Pirate junior clocked 22.67. He also zipped to the state’s fifth fastest time in the 400 (51.65). North Bend senior Michael Brown recorded the second fastest time for 4A boys in the 1500 (4:08.66) at the Gladstone Meet of Champions. Marshfield’s 4X100R team (Matthew Hampton, Trevor Johnson, Devin Benson & Zach Kellar) ran the third fastest time in the short relay (44.39). The Bulldogs Ty Hampton improved his state leading 4A Javelin mark to 195-04. That is also second best overall in the state. On the girl’s side, Marshfield’s Tess Garrett clocked the sixth fastest time for 800 meters (2:26.39). Jazmin Chavez recorded the fifth fastest time for 3000 (11:10.11). Elsie Martin leaped to the fourth best mark in 4A in the Triple Jump (33-11.50). Marshfield and North Bend have a Far West League JV meet at North Bend Tuesday, May 2. The Pirates host a Tracktown Youth League meet on Wednesday, and the Middle School District championships Friday. North Bend has the Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove on Friday.
