Southwestern Hosts Spring Hiring Forum, May 2

Southwestern Oregon Community College is hosting a Hiring Forum, sponsored by the College to Careers (C2) Grant, a Department of Labor initiative geared toward helping students become job-ready upon completion of short-term training. The Hiring Forum is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2, 2017 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 p.m. in Empire Hall on Southwestern’s Coos Campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay. Southwestern invites students to come and participate in the afternoon’s events that will give them the opportunity to meet with local employers from several industries in our area.  These professionals bring years of experience and information to apply effective and proven methods for gaining and maintaining employment. The opening session will include an interactive activity, “Ask the Eggspert Gameshow,” where students test their knowledge of hiring practices and compete for prizes. Students will then break into smaller groups based on industry sectors (Business and Hospitality, Allied Health, and Welding/Manufacturing) for an interactive panel discussion with employers regarding best practices and their expectations for job seekers. “The panel discussions give students the opportunity to hear directly from employers, what makes an ideal candidate and what they should do to land the right job,” said Alane Jennings, College to Careers (C2) Grant Administrator at Southwestern. The second part of the breakout gives students the opportunity to participate in Mock ‘Speed’ Interviews with one or more employers.  “This is a golden opportunity to practice interviewing skills in a low stress environment,” said Jennings. Students are encouraged to bring their resumes and questions that will help them be a better prepared job seeker. Finally, students will participate in a wrap up where there will be a drawing for several prizes. The afternoon is packed with dos and don’ts and answers many questions about how to get a job and keep it.
