Southwestern Students to be Honored by the Governor, March 17

On April 22, 2014 Governor Kitzhaber will honor an audience of students selected by their community colleges for the All Oregon Academic Team. Southwestern Oregon Community College selected Kaitlyn Fallon and Tim Edingfield to the 2014 Team. The honored recipients will attend the event in Salem with Southwestern President Dr. Patty Scott where they will be recognized for their achievements. “Students are chosen on the basis of service, leadership and academic achievement and the designation helps our students to become eligible for additional scholarships” says Dr. Scott. Fallon’s hometown is Roseburg, Oregon. She is studying Speech Pathology and is involved on campus and in the community. She serves as the Activities Director for the Associated Student Government, President of the Golden Z Club, and is involved in various projects raising money for children with cancer, clothing for a homeless teen shelter, and is a volunteer with Special Olympics. She’s been on the Dean’s list, received scholarships from Marshfield High School, the Miller Foundation, the Ford Family Sons and Daughters program of the Ford Family Foundation, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Upon completion of her associate’s degree this spring, Fallon will be the first in her family to get a college degree. Next year, she plans to transfer to the University of Oregon to pursue a master’s in communication disorders. An Arizona native, Edingfield studies Business and is very involved, both on campus and in the community. He is the Volunteer Services Director for the Associated Student Government, President of SWOCC Phi Theta Kappa, Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 153, member of the Nurturing Coalition Board and Rotary, reader for SMART, chair of the Van Jam Committee, and a student tutor and mentor. He’s been on the Dean’s list, is an Eagle Scout, and received a scholarship from the Miller Foundation. In June, Edingfield will complete his associate’s degree. His future plans include continuing his education through Portland State University’s online business management program as it will enable him to stay in the area and work with the Downtown Association and local Rotary groups to improve the local economic structure. Thirty Southwestern students are members of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society that values scholastic achievement, leadership and community service.
