Spring Beach Cleanup, March 24

Thousands of volunteers journeyed to Oregon’s beach front Saturday for the annual Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup sponsored by the statewide organization SOLVE.  As in the past, volunteers mostly picked up cigarette butts, plastic bottles and ropes from fishing vessels.  Some of the more unique items discovered included remains of a sunken crab vessel at Brookings, a large semi-truck tire at Gleneden Beach and a 200 lb. block of Styrofoam at Netarts Bays.  Officials estimate over 4,500 volunteers participated and removed an estimated 45,955 lbs. of debris, including 14 tires.  The beach cleanup is held twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.
