News release CBPD. On 08/29/17 at approximately 1350 hours, Senior Officer Darrell Babb was on duty as a police officer and working patrol in the Empire area of Coos Bay. Senior Officer Babb decided to do a patrol check at the Empire Boat Ramp parking lot. As Senior Officer Babb made his way into the parking lot, he was immediately flagged down by a citizen screaming for help. The citizen advised Senior Officer Babb that a male subject inside of a parked vehicle was having a severe medical emergency. Senior Officer Babb immediately sprang into action and ran over to the male subject. He quickly determined that the victim male was having a life threatening medical emergency and needed immediate medical help. Senior Officer Babb quickly removed the male from the driver seat and laid him on the ground in order to get him in position to begin administering CPR. Senior Officer Babb also radioed a Coos Bay Police Department 911 Dispatcher Kristin McGarity who immediately dispatched Coos Bay Fire and Bay Cities Ambulance to respond to the incident. Senior Officer Babb started CPR and didn’t quit until medics arrived on scene to take over. At some point during the life saving efforts, the victim male’s pulse returned and he started attempting to take some breaths on his own. The male was immediately transported to Bay Area Hospital for some more advanced medical treatment. If it wasn’t for the immediate actions of Senior Officer Babb and his willingness to perform lifesaving efforts on the male victim, medical treatment would have been delayed, resulting in only more severe medical trauma. The Coos Bay Police Department is extremely proud to have officers like Senior Officer Darrell Babb working for the police department and serving the citizens of Coos Bay. Senior Officer Babb has been serving the Coos Bay Citizen’s for nearly 18 years. Thank-you Senior Officer Babb for your selfless service.
