Through December 9, 2017 Coos Art Museum will be hosting Heads up: The Satirical Art of Stan Fullerton. The exhibition which takes place in the Museum’s Uno E. Richter Atrium Gallery features paintings, etchings and sculpture by Coos Bay artist Stan Fullerton. An opening reception will take place on October 13 from 5 – 7 pm and all are invited to attend this free event. Satire has a long history in the arts and was central to the counterculture movements of the late 1950s and the 1960s. Fullerton, a student of the famous German/American satirical painter George Grosz was on the road to becoming a major artistic figure in his own right with several New York solo-exhibitions to his credit. Fullerton was also an active participant of the “Beat Culture” centered in San Francisco and the City Lights Bookstore. In particular, he was personal friends with literary figures such as Allen Ginsberg and Richard Brautigan. From such sources he derived his satirical outlook on life, art and authority figures, his favorite targets. “I paint human folly. I paint authority figures as fools, and fools as authority figures.” Fullerton was eventually to reject both the “counter culture scene” and the art world. Yet, he continued to actively make art. Much of his art also continued to have a serious biting edge. Works for this exhibition were produced over several decades and were selected for their satirical and humorous content. Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic Southern Coast since 1966. It occupies an historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay.
