Overdose in Central Coast Jail, Nov. 17

On Monday, November 13, 2017 Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputies responded to a medical emergency in the E Pod housing unit of the Lincoln County Jail. At approximately 6:00pm a deputy assigned to the E Pod housing unit was alerted to one of the cells by an inmate who pressed their emergency call box button. When the deputy responded, the inmate appeared to be in distress and told the deputy he had ingested Heroin. The deputy recognized signs of possible overdose and requested the response of jail medical staff and an ambulance to assist. While waiting the arrival of Pacific West Ambulance, deputies and medical staff administered Narcan to the inmate. Narcan (Naloxone) is an opiate antidote. Opiates include Heroin and many prescription pain medications such as Morphine, Codeine, Oxycodone, and Methadone. The inmate was monitored by jail staff until Pacific West Ambulance arrived on scene and transported him to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital for further treatment. “We are very appreciative of the quick actions of our corrections staff to render the appropriate aid to one of our inmates suffering a medical emergency,” stated Sheriff Curtis Landers. “They relied on their training and available resources, in this case Naloxone, which we obtained for this very situation,” Landers said. The Sheriff’s Office obtained 35 units of Naloxone in July of this year through a donation from Samaritan Health Services. The Sheriff’s Office maintains Naloxone in all of the housing units of the jail as well as all of their patrol cars for administration in the field. Following the incident, the jail was locked down for a full search of the facility. Newport Police Department’s Canine Team, trained in drug detection, assisted with the search. No additional controlled substances were detected during the full scale search of the facility.
