CCSO release. On March 16, 2018, at about 11:50 am, a deputy from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office encountered a white in color Honda Civic occupied by two females near Highway 101 and Newport Road. The deputy noted that the windshield was obstructed by fog or precipitation except for a small area which was wiped clear on the driver side. The window was otherwise obstructed. Based upon this observation, the Deputy stopped the vehicle. The driver was identified as Joy Sims who had a suspended driver’s license. Signs and symptoms of drug impairment were also noted. The Sheriff’s Office called for Officer Rob Scoville of the Coquille Tribal Police Department and his K9 partner “Ben”, a drug detection K9, to respond. Upon their arrival K9 Ben did an open air search of around the vehicle and alerted with a positive indication for the presence of narcotics. Based on this indication a search of the vehicle was conducted and items believed to be narcotics paraphernalia were seized to be sent to the Oregon State Police Crime Lab to be analyzed. Ms. Sims consented to Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was later arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII). Sims, a client of the Coos County Parole and Probation Department also had a probation violation detainer placed upon her by that agency. Sims was lodged at the Coos County Jail. She is being held on the probation violation with no bail and was cited to appear on the DUII charge. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Coquille Tribal Police and Coos County Parole and Probation Department. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens that extra patrols will be out this weekend for the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. These patrols are focusing on detecting drivers who operate vehicles under the influence of intoxicants. Please be safe and have a sober designated driver if you wish to indulge this weekend.
