The owner of a commercial fishing vessel out of Winchester Bay has been charged with assault following a boarding by the U.S. Coast Guard, August 16th, 17-nautical miles offshore. Branden Michael Vanderpoloeg, of Winchester Bay, was charged with Assault Within Maritime Jurisdiction and Operating a Commercial Vessel under the Influence of Alcohol. A USCG helicopter from North Bend initially responded to the report of a woman in distress on board the fishing vessel “Pescadero.” Umpqua River Station also launched a Response Boat & crew. Upon boarding, they allegedly noticed the strong smell of alcohol on Vanderploeg. A breath test revealed a blood-alcohol level of .183%. The 38-year old’s girlfriend also reportedly had injuries to her face, neck and arms. The vessel’s voyage was terminated and it was towed to Winchester Bay. The victim was transported to a hospital and Vanderploeg is on pre-trial release.
