Coquille River Fatality, Oct. 16

Webber’s Pier, CCSO release – On 10/12/18 at approximately 5:00 P.M Coos County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol Deputies and the Bandon Police Department responded to the area of Webbers Pier, located in Bandon, Oregon for a reported boating accident. Through the course of the investigation it was determined Richard Indin and Fred Olsen, both from the Denver Colorado were on vacation and crabbing out of Bullard’s beach campground area on the Coquille River. At some point during their voyage, approximately around 2:45 P.M Richard Indins’ vessel a 12’ Porta-Bote took a wave over the bow filling the small boat with water. The boat did not sink and both occupants of the boat stayed in the boat that was full with water. Approximately one hour later Mr. Indin was seen by local boater(s) Troy and Kim Meeder. The Meeders’ immediately took both victims on the partially submerged Porta-bote and transported them to the Port of Bandon where they were transported by Bay Cities Ambulance to Southern Coos Hospital. Mr. Indin was treated for severe hypothermia and ultimately released for the hospital. After about 1.5 hours Mr. Olsen succumbed and died which was more likely than not from hypothermia.
