South 6th Street Smoke Testing, Nov. 20

The City of Coos Bay will be conducting smoke testing investigation of the storm sewer system on South 6th Street by forcing smoke into the lines. This testing will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, November 20, 2018 (weather permitting). This smoke will help locate where storm laterals are connected to private systems (i.e. catch basins, roof drains etc.). Residents should never see or smell the smoke. A special non-toxic smoke will be used in the smoke testing investigation. The smoke is manufactured for this purpose and, therefore, leaves no residuals or stains and has no effect on plants and animals. Escape points can be as simple as roof gutters, down spouts, cellar, yard or basement drains, catch basin and parking lot drains or other connections to the storm system. If traces of the smoke enter your house or building, open doors and windows to ventilate any smoke that enters the building.  If traces of smoke are seen in the residence, there may be a deficiency with the plumbing inside the residence. The tests will occur during the daytime hours and should only last one day. The City will provide notice 24 hours before testing is scheduled in your neighborhood via a hanger on the affected property’s front door.  If you have any questions, or desire more information, please call Jessica Spann at (541) 269-1181 ext. 2221.
