Harris Beach Reopening, June 8

BROOKINGS, Ore. – Harris Beach State Park will reopen for public use June 9, albeit with reduced services levels for day-users and campers. “We’re eager to safely welcome back visitors to the park,” said Dani Padilla, park manager. “But given that we’re working with reduced staff and resources, we’ll be counting on folks to recreate responsibly.” Day-use visitors should expect reduced restroom hours, less frequent trash pickup, reduced trail and grounds maintenance, and fewer park rangers. Visitors are encouraged to plan their trip ahead of time, and pack out what they pack in. Campers can book a reservation starting June 3, for stays beginning June 9. The campground will be open to RV and tent reservations only. First-come, first-served camping will not be available, and yurts, group camps, and hiker/biker camping all remain closed. Campers should expect reduced services, too: showers are closed, the playground is closed, and only one extra vehicle is allowed per campsite. Visit the Harris Beach State Park webpage on stateparks.oregon.gov for full details about service reductions. These south coast state parks remain closed until further notice: Alfred A. Loeb State Park; Crissey Field State Recreation Site; Winchuck State Recreation Site; Harris Beach Rest Area. These south coast parks are open with reduced services: McVay Rock State Recreation Site; Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor; Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint; Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is experiencing a severe revenue shortfall due the economic fallout from COVID-19. The agency does not receive tax dollars and is primarily funded by Oregon Lottery revenue and user fees. State parks across the state are operating with minimal ranger staff, and agency administrative staff will experience layoffs by the end of June.
