Oregon Employment Dept. report – Coos County total payroll employment rose by 160 jobs in October, following a gain of 250 jobs in September. In October, job losses were estimated in professional and business services (60); manufacturing (-50); and leisure and hospitality (-30). Private education and health services employment rose by 50 jobs in October. Gains of 20 jobs were tallied in both construction and Indian tribal local government. Total government employment rose by 160 jobs over the month with a seasonally expected increase of 150 jobs in local government education accounting for most of the rise. Rarely does the South Coast outpace Oregon’s overall job growth rate, or in this case, job losses in this corner of Oregon are slightly less than the state overall. Coos County’s over the year total payroll employment fell by 1,270 jobs, a drop of 5.5 percent. Oregon’s statewide payroll employment fell by 7.5 percent over the year. Coos County job losses were widespread outside of a few jobs gained over the year in construction (+20) and general merchandise stores (+20). Sectors with job loss included leisure and hospitality (-210); private education and health services (-210); retail trade (-120); professional and business services (-90); and construction (-90). Government employment fell by 370 over the year with losses estimated in Indian tribal local government (-160) and local education (-140). Curry County lost 180 payroll jobs in October. Leisure and hospitality employment fell by 140 jobs and government employment slipped by 20 jobs. Over the year, payroll employment fell by 210 jobs or a loss of 3.1 percent. Industries shedding the most jobs since October 2019 were leisure and hospitality (-40); financial activities (-40); manufacturing (-30); construction (-30); and information (-20). A few industries had estimated jobs gain over the year including retail trade, other services, and health care, each adding 20 jobs.
