Tsunami Siren Sounds on Central Coast, Jan. 5

Residents and visitors to the “World’s Smallest Harbor” on the Central Oregon Coast were alarmed Saturday after the City of Depoe Bay decided to sound its Tsunami Siren to warm about impending high winds. The confusion resulted in many calls and emails to the city’s fire department. Fire Chief Bryan Daniels stated there was not tsunami threat. The Pacific Storm did produce high winds, 84 mph at Cape Perpetua south of Yachats and 75 at the Yaquina Bay Bridge at Newport. One visitor reportedly wrote “please reserve the doomsday siren for an actual doomsday.”
