The last two high school sports years have been tough on preps trying to do what they can only do once in their life, and many opted out to go on to higher education or work because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a few dotted the rosters of Bay Area high school teams this past school year. At Marshfield, senior Robert Kliewer capped his Pirate career as a member of the Marshfield boys State Champion Swim Team. Kliewer also ran cross county for the Pirates, track and field, and played the trumpet as a member of the school’s band. At the State Swim Championships at Cottage Grove, Kliewer won the 100 Backstroke (1:05.39) was a member of the winning 400 Freestyle Relay team (3:34.19) as Marshfield edged fellow league member Marist Catholic 227-217 for the state title. Newport (288) won the girl’s meet with Marshfield finishing fourth (157). Another Marshfield senior Noah Niblett also capped a fine Pirate career. He was a member of the third-place state football team and the lone senior starter on the state champion basketball team.
