Capsizing at Umpqua River Bar Claims Two Lives, Sept. 28

An adult female and a five-year old girl drowned Sunday, Sept. 26, when the boat they were in riding capsized just outside the Umpqua River Bar at Winchester Bay. The US Coast Guard was notified of the capsizing about 9:30 a.m. A 29-foot quick response boat, a 47-foot life boat and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene. Three people were recovered from the water, but the woman and girl were trapped in the cabin of the capsized boat. A rescue swimmer was able to pull both out, but they were reportedly unresponsive. The woman was pronounced deceased at the dock in Salmon Harbor while the girls was transported by ambulance to a hospital where she later passed. Names of those involved have not been released.
