Monday, Feb. 28 is the first day that the OSAA allows its members to start Spring Sports practices for golf, track & field, tennis, softball and baseball. Games will begin the week of March 13th.

Marshfield’s girls advanced to the OSAA State Basketball Round of 16 Playoffs with a 42-29 “Play-In” win at home Saturday afternoon over Sweet Home. The Lady Pirates (17-8) will play at No. 3 Seed Baker (19-5), Saturday, March 5, 4 p.m. Two other District 4 (Sky-Em League) teams are also in the “Sweet 16.” League champion Junction City (20-4) will host Hidden Valley (13-10), Grants Pass, and Marist Catholic (15-7) will play at Gladstone (17-3). All on Saturday, March 5. Winners advance to the OSAA 4A State Championships at Marshfield HS beginning March 10.

North Bend’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams dropped a pair of 5A Midwestern League games at Thurston in eastern Springfield Friday night. The Colt girls on 48-31 and the boys prevailed 59-21. The Bulldogs end the regular season Tuesday, March 1, at home to Willamette. Girls (5-10, 11-13) varsity at 5:15 p.m., followed by the boys (0-15, 2-22) at 6:45 p.m.

Marshfield’s boys (21-4), the No. 3 Seed to the OSAA 4A State Basketball Tournament, will host Corbett in the “Sweet 16” round Friday, March 4, 8:30 p.m., Pirate Palace, Coos Bay. Corbett (15-5) advanced with a 62-53 “Play-In” round win at home Saturday night over Tillamook. Also, out of District 4 (Sky-Em League) in the round of 16 are No. 1 Seed Junction City. The Tigers (21-3) host Molalla (12-10), while Marist Catholic (16-8) plays at No. 2 Seed Cascade (18-3). All on Friday, March 4. Winners advance to the OSAA 4A State Championships at North Bend beginning March 10.

Marshfield’s Miguel Velasquez won the 195 lb. 4A weight class at the OSAA State Championships Saturday, Cascade HS, Turner. The senior (27-2) defeated Brody MacMillan, La Grande, in the finals by Decision 9-5. La Grande won the team title with defending champion Sweet Home second followed by Tillamook and Philomath. North Bend’s Neal Walter was runner-up at 285 in the 5A championships at Ridgeview HS, Redmond, also Saturday. The Junior (30-4) fell to Crescent Valley senior Riley Godek (23-4) in the finals (MD 14-3). Crescent Valley, out of Corvallis, won the team title followed by Crook Co., Thurston & Redmond. Tommy Vigue, Coquille, was champion at 220 at the 2A/1A finals at Culver HS. The sophomore (24-10) defeated Adrian senior Toby Clow (33-3) in the championship match with a Fall at 1:37. Myrtle Point sophomore Logan Clayburn (23-5) was second at 195 losing by a Fall 5:23 to Toledo sophomore Ash Blomstrom (26-4). MHS results: 106 – soph. Spencer Pederson d Nehemiah Gaul, Estacada, 12-8, in the opening round. Freshman Reese Hite also won his opener by decision 10-6 over River Sandstrom, Philomath. That matched Hite and Pederson in the quarter-final round. Pederson won by a Fall (3:52) to advance to the semi-finals. There he lost to Sweet Home sophomore Kyle Sieminski by Fall (:39). Both Pederson and Hite moved to the Consolation Bracket where they ran into Tillamook freshman Jak Hopkes. The Cheesemaker eliminated Hite by MD 8-0, after Hite pinned Michael Young, Madras, (4:08). Pederson then lost to Hopkes in the Fifth-Place bout by Fall (4:47). David Bouska (113) lost his opener to eventual state champion Jacob Landtroop, La Grande by Fall (1:23). The sophomore came back to pin (1:59) Tanner Watkins, North Valley, but lose to Joshua Perdew, Tillamook, in the next round by Fall (:47). At 152, Jonathan Calvert won his opener over Jared Isaacson, La Grande, by Decision 7-6, but lost in the quarter-final round to Ernie Preciado, Woodburn, by Decision 3-0. In the Consolation Bracket, the junior lost to David Griffith, Philomath by MD 15-5. Velazquez pinned his first three opponents, Alexander Sigrah, Ontario, (:28), James Durand, Estacada (3:29), & Gauge Bloomer, Baker (:39). At 220, Hayden Murphy lost his opener by Fall (1:37) to Seaside’s Lawson Talamantez, and then lost to Luke Wolgamott, Elmira, by Fall (1:00). NBHS results: At 132, Wyatt Smith lost his opener to DJ Gillett, Crescent Valley, by Fall (:41), got a win over Fernando Gonzalez, Springfield, in the consolation bracket by Forfeit, and then lost to Jarron Huebner by Decision (8-4). Walter had three-straight pins enroute to the 285 final. The junior beat Coy Mathiasen, Crook Co. (:29), Marquies A’au, Milwaukie (:42), and Jacob Griffin, Pendleton (5:23).
OSAA 3A Basketball Tournament
The fields are set for this week’s OSAA 3A State Basketball Tournaments at North Bend and Marshfield high schools. Eight girl’s teams and eight boy’s teams will be in town for playoff games beginning Thursday, March 3. The girl’s teams will start at Marshfield HS with Oregon Episcopal playing Creswell at 1:30 p.m., followed by Santiam Christian vs. Burns at 3:15 p.m., Amity vs. Sutherlin at 6:30 p.m., and Brookings-Harbor vs. Nyssa at 8:15 p.m. The boy’s teams will start at North Bend with Pleasant Hill vs. Westside Christian at 1:30 p.m., Umatilla & Cascade Christian at 3:15 p.m., Vale vs. Dayton at 6:30 p.m., and Oregon Episcopal vs. De La Salle North Catholic at 8:15 p.m. Semi-final rounds are on Friday and championship games Saturday all at Marshfield.
