It got its name from those who served on the isolated, cold, wet Tillamook Lighthouse off the North Oregon Coast. Terrible Tilly, built in 1881 at a cost of $123,493 the lighthouse, about a mile offshore from Seaside & Cannon Beach, has sat dark since it was decommissioned in 1957. Investors bought it at auction in 1959 for $5,600. In 1973 it was sold for $11,000. The price kept going up each time it turned over. In 1978 it sold for $27,000. By 1980 the price had increased to $50,000 and the owners turned it into a Mausoleum with plans to hold up to 300,000 urns. Today the asking price is $6.5 million. You can only access the exposed basalt outcropping by helicopter. Terrible Tilly sits 133-feet above the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. Time has deteriorated most of the building’s interior. The site and structure are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
