The 2022-23 Flu Season, Oct. 11

Oregon Health Sciences University release – Why it Is Just as Important as COVID; We haven’t seen much of a flu season the last couple of years. The things we’ve been doing to protect us from COVID — mask wearing, physical distancing and handwashing — have also protected us from the flu. But this season, we could see more people in the hospital with the flu than COVID. Why health experts are worried – Since we haven’t been exposed as much to the flu, our general population has less built-up immunity. We are also worried because Australia is seeing its worst flu season in 5 years. Australia’s flu season often predicts how the U.S. flu season goes. And in a typical flu season, there are 140,000+ hospitalizations and 12,000+ deaths in the U.S. How do I protect myself and my family? By getting a flu shot. The CDC recommends: Flu shots for everyone older than 6 months. Special high-dose flu shots for everyone ages 65+. Getting the flu shot by the end of October (although better late than never). For the most accurate results, test 5 days after exposure or within the first 2–3 days after your first symptoms. Learn more about preventing flu – How do I get a flu shot?
