OSAA Winter Sports
Nov. 14, 2022 first date allowed for Winter Sports practices (basketball, wrestling, swimming, dance) within the OSAA membership. First contest date is Nov. 30, 2022.

Marshfield cross-country runner Alexander Garcia Silver qualified for the Nike Nationals with a fifth-place finish at the NXR Northwest Regional Championships Saturday at Eagle Island State Park, Idaho. Garcia Silver, the OSAA 4A State Champion the week prior, ran 15:06.2 over the 5K course. Tyrone Gorze, of Crater in Central Point the 5A State Champion who set a new course record at the State Championships, took first-place in 14:51.6. The Nike Nationals are scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4.

It was a tough 19-hours in the Klamath Basin for the two highly-ranked Klamath County School District football teams in the OSAA quarter-final playoffs. Both games were played on the turf at Mazama High School. First up was No. 5 Estacada vs. No. 4 Henley Friday night. Both had lost to Mazama during the regular season. The Rangers upset the Hornets and won 17-16 to advance to the semi-finals. On Saturday afternoon, top-ranked and unbeaten Mazama fell to No. 8 Scappoose 28-27 in overtime. Estacada will now play Scappoose in the semi-finals, Saturday, Nov. 19, 5:30 p.m., Hillsboro Stadium. In the bottom-half of the bracket, No. 2 La Grande advances to play No. 6 Tillamook, also Saturday, Nov. 19, 5 p.m., at Barlow HS. La Grande beat Pendleton/Nixyaawii for the second time this season 28-13, while the Cheesemakers downed visiting Gladstone 28-6. In 1A 8-Player play-offs, No. 5 Myrtle Pt. advances to the semi-final round with a 38-22 win at Crane on Friday. The Bobcats will play St. Paul for a second time this season Saturday, Nov. 19, 4:30 p.m., Cottage Grove HS. No. 1 Powers fell in the 1A 6-Player semi-final playoffs at home Saturday to No. 4 Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler 55-19.

Ontario won the OSAA 4A Boy’s State Soccer Championship over Phoenix 1-0 Saturday at Liberty HS in Hillsboro. Marist Catholic, of Eugene, won the 4A Girl’s Championship 4-0 over Hidden Valley also Saturday at Liberty HS.
