UO release – AUSTIN, Texas — Oregon running back Bucky Irving and quarterback Bo Nix were both announced as first-team academic all-Americans on Tuesday morning by College Sports Communicators. Irving and Nix become just the third pair of Oregon teammates to earn first-team academic all-America status in the same season, joining Joey Harrington and Ryan Schmid in 2001 and Steve Barnett and Ed Thomas in 1962. They are Oregon’s first academic all-America first-team selections since Justin Herbert earned the honor three years in a row from 2017-19. Irving is the first Oregon running back ever to earn academic all-America status, while Nix joins Herbert, Harrington and Bill Musgrave (1990) as UO quarterbacks to receive the distinction. Irving carried a 3.63 cumulative GPA while majoring in family and human services. On the field, he surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the second consecutive season with 1,180 and 11 touchdowns on 186 carries. He also led all FBS running backs in receptions with 56, totaling 413 yards through the air with two more touchdowns. Nix was the winner of the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy, the nation’s most prestigious scholar-athlete award, and was also the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year. He joined Herbert as the only Ducks to win the Campbell Trophy after graduating from Auburn with a 3.62 GPA in communications, and he carried a 3.91 post-graduate GPA while at Oregon. Nix put together arguably the most prolific season ever by an Oregon quarterback, earning a spot as a Heisman Trophy finalist while setting the NCAA single-season record for completion percentage 77.45 (364-of-470). He led the nation with 51 total touchdowns, and broke the Oregon single-season records for completions (364), passing yards (4,508) and passing touchdowns (45) while throwing just three interceptions. Both Irving and Nix left their marks on the Oregon record books in two seasons with the Ducks. Irving ranks fourth in Oregon history in yards per carry (6.54), and is just the sixth Duck ever to have multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Nix leaves as the Oregon all-time leader in completion percentage (74.9) while ranking third in completions (658), third in passing touchdowns (74) and fifth in passing yards (8,101).
