The acclaimed NW poet Robert Hunter Jones gives a free, public reading from his new book of poems, Winter Garden, on Wednesday, July 6 at 6:30 pm, at the North Bend Public Library. He was awarded the Gerald Cable Prize, which published Winter Garden (Silverfish Press, 2016). Jones is the author of The Clever Man’s Forest and grew up by the dunes near Lakeside, in a logging and longshoring family. While a student at Southwestern, he edited The Beacon and became a long distance runner, and worked summers as a member of the Hot Shots, an elite fire fighting crew. His poems have been published in Northwest Review, Fireweed, Alaska Quarterly Review and Poetry Northwest. Portland’s major poet Matthew Dickman praised Winter Garden, noting that it “is a whole world made out of beautiful lyric narratives, a wonder and care for nature, and the deep songs of memory.” Jones received his B.A. from Lewis & Clark College, and his M.A. in Creative Writing from Brown University. For over 15 years he’s taught upper level English at the American International School in Vienna, Austria, where he lives with his wife and children. He and his family return home to the south coast each year to spend summers in Lakeside. This program is free and open to the public in the library’s meeting room.
