The American Red Cross shelter set up for evacuees of the Chetco Bar Wildfire served more than 150 meals Wednesday, Aug. 23, and housed 20 people overnight. The Red Cross has provided 114 overnight stays and 1,100 meals and snacks since setting up a wildfire evacuation shelter in Curry County on Friday, August 18th. The Red Cross shelter in Gold Beach remains open to provide assistance to people displaced from their homes because of the Chetco Bar Wildfire and is located at Riley Elementary School, 94350 6th St, Gold Beach, OR 97444. Individuals and families in need of shelter assistance may simply show up at the shelter for help. People facing evacuations and in need of shelter assistance may call (888) 680-1455. The following services are available at the shelter to people displaced by the Chetco Bar Wildfire: shelter (sleeping area, cots, blankets); food (hot meals and snacks); water and coffee; a shower facility; informational updates from the Fire Management Team (typically daily resident briefings); other assistance (dependent on individual or community needs); information on pet shelter assistance; information on livestock relocation. The Red Cross will be delivering wildfire preparedness education including information on how to create defensible space around your home and what items to have packed in an emergency preparedness kit at the Fred Meyer and Bi-Mart in Brookings as well as the Grocery Outlet in Harbor.
