Another K-9 Unit in Douglas Co., Aug. 16

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. – The Sheriff’s Office announced today that it will be adding a second K-9 team to the patrol division. A generous donation from a couple in the community and the financial support of the Friends of Umpqua Valley Police K-9 Programs has made the addition possible. Sergeants Brad O’Dell and Jon Dorland will be traveling next month to Riverside, California to select the new dog, which will be partnered with Deputy Brandon Black. The dog will then live with Deputy Black and the two will begin bonding as a team. This fall, they will undergo a training and certification process in partnership with the Springfield Police Department and Oregon Police Canine Association.  “We are very excited about this opportunity. This isn’t just great news for the Sheriff’s Office, this is something that the entire community will benefit from. We sincerely thank everyone involved,” said, Sgt. Brad O’Dell. Over the next few months, the Sheriff’s Office will continue to preparations for the team. “We will work closely with our partners to identify any needs to ensure they are fully equipped and properly trained.” O’Dell said.  The new team will be joining Deputy Oscar Rosas and K9 Grim to enhance the services the Sheriff’s Office is able to provide. K9 Grim, a 7 year-old German Shepherd, was purchased for the agency in 2013 and has proven to be a successful tool. The Friends of Umpqua Valley Police K-9 Programs is able to support the police programs in the county through donations from the community.
