Assault in North Bend, July 21

News release Coos Co. District Attorney R. Paul Frasier.  This afternoon (Thursday, July 20) at approximately 3:58 PM, the North Bend Police Department received a 911 call indicating that an adult male was walking on a sidewalk on Broadway Avenue in North Bend and that this person was covered in blood. North Bend Police responded and located at the corner of 14th Street and Broadway a male adult covered in blood. The person was transported to Bay Area Hospital. The person has been identified as 30-year-old Mark Eugene Hendrix. His last known address is in the Millington area of Coos County. At Bay Area Hospital, it was determined Mr. Hendrix had a skull fracture, a broken eye orbit and a broken nose. The skull fracture has caused significant brain injury. Mr. Hendrix was then flown to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. He has been described to be in critical condition. His injuries appear to have been the result of an assault involving some sort of a blunt object being used to strike Mr. Hendrix on the head. The Coos County Major Crime Team was activated and officers from Coos Bay Police, Coquille Police, Coquille Tribal Police, Oregon State Police, Coos County Community Corrections, SCINT, Coos County Community Corrections, the Coos County Medical Examiner’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office responded. The police are currently interviewing or locating potential witnesses to this incident. The police believe they have identified the location where the assault occurred. We are not releasing the location of the incident at this time as we are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for those premises.
