The City of Astoria is joining Clatsop County and the State Parks Dept. in banning public smoking in parks. The city council approved the ordinance on a 4-1 vote Monday night, Aug. 17. The new ordinance should go into effect in September. City officials say the ban is an attempt to promote wellness, decrease exposure to secondhand smoke, discourage litter and provide an example for youth. The Oregon Tobacco Prevention and Education Program will contribute financially to new signage.
