News release Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On August 28, 2016 at about 1521 hours a deputy from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office responded to Boxcar Hill, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in response to a report of a roll over crash involving a Yamaha YXZ1000R side by side ATV. Upon arrival, Raul Alvarado, the passenger in the side by side was found bleeding from the head inside of the vehicle. Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that Steven Haug had been operating the ATV travelling south bound when Alvarado, after seeing other riders on a hill, pointed and grabbed the wheel jerking it in the direction of the other riders. Haug attempted to regain control, but the vehicle turned over multiple times. Haug estimated his speed at 40 or 45 miles per hour. Alvarado was found to be intoxicated. Alvarado was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants as he exercised control over the vehicle when he grabbed the wheel. Alvarado was transported to the hospital where a search warrant was sought and granted allowing a sample of blood to be drawn from Alvarado. At the time of being arrested, Alvarado, pulled away and will be referred to the Coos County District Attorney’s Office for resisting arrest. Alvarado will be additionally referred for Recklessly Endangering Steven Haug. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by members from Hauser Fire and Rescue. Mr. Haug was cleared at the scene by medical personnel.
