News release BACC. The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC), after a thorough review of the proposal, has voted to strongly oppose Coos County Measure 6-162 and urges you to also reject this unconstitutional and economically damaging Measure. This measure will regulate the use of fossil fuel in trucks, ships, trains and airplanes. It is focused on not allowing transportation of product across county lines that is not specifically for use within our County (Coos). This in effect will not allow transportation of fossil fuels out of our port that could create a positive environmental change in other areas of the world that need cleaner fuels for commercial and personal operations. It would also stymie the transport of fuel/diesel/stove oil into our neighboring county, Curry. Those additional operating costs, to avoid going through Coos County, by the transporting service, will drive up the end-user’s price, in a county that is presently having tough financial times. This measure can also affect the operation of and transportation by our airlines, as almost all, of their travel is outside Coos County. For the same reason, the rail system would fall under this operations limitation. The impact, by 6-162, to the development of our bay front facilities that involve the transportation of fossil fuels to Hawaii, Alaska and other countries, could significantly damage our future economy and jobs in the local area. “It’s plain to see that this misguided attempt to change our laws is deeply flawed and unconstitutional. Because of that, the measure will be easily struck down by the courts, but not before taxpayers are forced to pay the costs to defend it. We have schools and infrastructure that desperately need those scarce resources,” said Coos County Commissioner Melissa Cribbins. Measure 6-162: • Is federally unconstitutional; • Will weaken world interest in our area by not being a Port of Call that can freely transport all products to other countries and states; • If passed, will waste scarce county revenues by requiring Coos County taxpayers to defend it in court. We urge you to vote NO on Coos County Measure 6-162.
