Beach Balls and Sea Lions, May 29

In the latest effort to discourage sea lions from slumbering on public docks at Oregon’s coastal ports, the Port of Astoria has turned to colorful beach balls. The beach balls are attached by a fishing line to each dock. Apparently sea lions don’t like them. After they were placed, the sea lions left the docks with only a very few remaining. Port officials are also going to use a fake Orca in another attempt to scare off the sea lions and encourage them to move on. The Port of Newport has been utilizing paint guns in their efforts to discourage the protected mammals.
