School Exclusion Day – School Exclusion Day is Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Oregon State Law requires that all children in school or daycare are fully protected against vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles and whooping cough. The goal is to make sure children are protected and can go to school in a safe and healthy environment. Coos County Public Health, located at 1975 McPherson in North Bend, will also be holding a walk-in clinic on Exclusion Day, Wednesday, February 18th. Importance of Vaccination: 1. Vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough, are very contagious and can cause serious complications, especially for infants and small children. 2. Vaccination is very safe and effective. 3. Immunization can save you or your loved ones life. 4. A child without proper vaccination can be denied attendance at school or daycare. Measles – From January 1 to January 30, 2015, 102 cases of measles have been reported in 14 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Washington. Most of these cases are part of a large, ongoing multi-state outbreak linked to Disneyland in California. Measles is still common in many parts of the world. Travelers with measles continue to bring the disease into the US. The best way to protect yourself and your family against measles and any vaccine-preventable disease is by vaccination. Children should receive 2 doses of MMR vaccine. Adults born on or after January 1st, 1957 who do not have documentation of adequate vaccination or laboratory evidence of immunity should receive at least one dose of MMR vaccine.
