A popular 35-year old Harbor Seal at the Oregon Coast Aquarium at Newport passed away recently after getting care at the OSU Veterinary School in Corvallis. “Boots” came to the aquarium in 1992 and outlived her counterparts in the wild by about ten years. She was suffering from severe ulcers in her esophagus and caretakers were concerned one could rupture further inhibiting her quality of life. The decision was made to move forward with humane euthanasia. Boots began showing signs of uncomfortableness this Spring when she was unable to eat. She was transported to OSU where an examination discovered the ulcers.
