News release Coos Bay FD. The Coos Bay Fire Department responded to the report of a fully engulfed house fire Monday night. When firefighters arrived at the Bunker Hill area home, there was heavy smoke throughout the house, but the fire was starving for fuel and oxygen. The fire was discovered by the homeowner, Dillon Hogan. After a brief attempt to put out the fire, Mr. Hogan and his wife escaped through the bedroom window. By closing doors behind them, the Hogans were able to compartmentalize the fire; and due to a lack of oxygen and fuel, the fire died down – allowing firefighters to quickly finish the job. The fire is believed to have started from unattended candles, and unfortunately, there were no smoke alarms in the home to alert the Hogans of the fire. Mr. Hogan was transported to Bay Area Hospital by Bay Cities Ambulance for first and second degree burns to his hands and back. He was treated and released. The home is insured, but the American Red Cross is working with the couple to address their immediate needs. The Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to remind our neighbors of our free smoke alarm program. In partnership with the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Coos Bay Fire Department can provide free smoke alarms for any resident of Coos Bay, Libby, Bunker Hill, or Timber Park. Not only does early detection reduce property damage, smoke alarms save lives.
