City of North Bend release – Chief Gary McCullough and Captain Cal Mitts also announce the promotion of Sgt. Ed Perry to Captain. City Administrator David A. Milliron announced the appointment of Cal Mitts as North Bend’s new Chief of Police, effective April 21, 2023. The appointment comes after Mitts was appointed Interim Police Captain in October 2021 along with Interim Police Chief Gary McCullough. Both men previously retired from the Coos Bay Police Department after long and decorated law enforcement careers. “Captain Mitt’s outstanding qualifications, extensive community experience, and stellar leadership, particularly in the last 18 months with the City of North Bend, have given me confidence in his ability to lead the department forward,” Milliron said. “We are forever grateful for Chief Gary McCullough’s service and wish him well in retirement. Chief McCullough initially agreed to serve for a year to stabilize the department, then extended for another six months. He and Captain Mitts worked tirelessly to restore the reputation of the North Bend Police Department as one of the best law enforcement agencies in the state. A big reason for their success is the relationship they built with the community and the relationship and investment in the professional development of our dedicated police officers.” Chief McCullough and Captain Mitts also announce the promotion of Sgt. Ed Perry to Captain on or around May 1, 2023. Congratulations! “Sgt. Perry has done an excellent job as a patrol supervisor, and we have every confidence in him as he transitions into his new position,” Mitts said.
