PRESSURE CANNER GAUGE TESTING: If you use a pressure canner with a gauge, we recommend you have it tested each year. The gauge is a delicate instrument and it’s vitally important that you know if it’s accurate BEFORE you begin using it to can your produce. We offer this free service year-round at the Extension Office in Myrtle Point, but next week we’ll have two opportunities to have your gauge tested in the bay area. On Wednesday, June 3rd, we’ll be at the Coos Bay Farmers’ Market from 9 am until 3 pm. Our booth is located near Central and Hwy. 101, next to the Coos County Master Gardeners booth – in front of the quilt shop. On Saturday, June 6, we’ll be at the Farmival event at the new Cascade Farm & Outdoor store. We’ll be inside, in the food preservation section, from 10 am until 2 pm. Bring you gauge still attached to your lid. We’ll test your gauge and check your plugs and gaskets (sounds like a car tune-up). You can even bring your entire canner if you’d like us to check it over for you. PRESSURE CANNING CLASS USING DRIED BEANS: We’ve added another workshop to our agenda. On Saturday, June 27, we’ll hold a pressure canning class using dried beans. This hands-on class will teach the fundamentals of pressure canning. So, even if you’re not into canning dried beans, you’ll learn the steps and important safety precautions for pressure canning foods like meats, seafood and vegetables. The class will be held at the OSU Extension Service in Myrtle Point, 10 am til 2 pm. Cost is $10. To reserve a seat, call 541-572-5263, ext. 25292. RECIPE TO MARKET WORKSHOP: The OSU Food Innovation Center is offering a Recipe to Market workshop in Port Orford on Monday, June 8, from 8:30 to 5:15. Cost is $150, which is money well spent if you’re interested in learning about marketing a food product you’ve created or are developing. You can learn more about the workshop by visiting http://extension.oregonstate.edu/coos/recipe-market-workshop-june You can also register there. There are some scholarships available to qualified applicants. Contact meggan.mclarrin@oregonstate.edu to learn more.
