Cape Arago Rescue, June 12

CCSO release – On June 11th, 2020, at approximately 1201 PM, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call with the report of a mother and eighteen year old son had slipped and fallen off the ledge of the cliff at the Cape Arago State Park at the end of Cape Arago Highway. The caller reported the eighteen year old son had fallen to the bottom of the cliff and appeared injured, while the mother was hanging onto the cliff trying not to fall to the bottom as well. Units with the Charleston Fire Department, Oregon State Police, Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Bay Cities Ambulance Oregon State Parks and the Coos Bay/North Bend Fire Department Rope Rescue team responded to the scene. The United State Coast Guard (USCG) sent two helicopters and other resources to assist with retrieving both individuals. After a combined effort from all personnel on scene, the mother was rescued and transported to the USCG Air Station to have her minor injuries evaluated. The second USCG Helicopter was able to rescue the son, whom was suffering from multiple injuries and transported him to the USCG Air Station. The son was transported to Bay Area Hospital by Bay Cities Ambulance to be treated. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that while the Oregon Coast is a beautiful place to travel and adventure, it can also be very dangerous.
