For the second time in a week, rescuers returned to Cape Kiwanda in southern Tillamook Co. Sunday, Aug. 16, this time to a report of a distressed surfer. The 22-year old male was reportedly drifting in and out of consciousness when the U.S. Coast Guard was first notified. Bystanders were able to lift the surfer out of the water an onto a rock formation when a Coast Guard helicopter lifted him and flew him to the Pacific City Airport. The unidentified surfer was then taken to a Portland hospital. The previous week, the bodies of an 18-year old female and her 22-year old boyfriend from Springfield were recovered from the Pacific Ocean after they drowned during an outing to Cape Kiwanda.
