Part of City of Coos Bay Newsletter, Feb 11, 2022 – The Coos Bay Fire Department (CBFD) had an eventful year in 2021. It was a full year of dealing with a global pandemic while trying to maintain services. Just when it felt as though we were through the worst of the COVID crisis, a resurgence, complete with new variants, led to tightening of restrictions and more mandates to fight the spreading virus. Despite all of that, CBFD staff continued to serve the community. This report is a brief summary of some of the highlights from 2021. 2021 Statistics: CBFD responded to 4,248 requests for assistance: a 6% increase over 2020; 39 percent of responses were in the Empire district. 8.5% were in contract districts of Libby, Timber Park or Bunker Hill. The busiest day of the year was August 15 with 26 responses. CBFD responded to 3,089 medical emergencies. All fire department staff are licensed Emergency Medical Technicians and eight are Paramedics. Of the 359 fires in 2021, 19 required assistance from the department volunteers, off-duty career staff and/or neighboring agencies. Public assistance responses include lift assist, welfare check, smoke investigation, false alarm or others. Hazardous conditions include motor vehicle accidents, downed powerlines, fuel spills, rope rescues, etc.
