News release from CBPD. In February, Coos Bay Police Officers made five impaired driving arrests. One of the five drivers was arrested by an officer working overtime specifically searching for impaired drivers. Funding to cover overtime expenses is provided by Oregon Impact, an organization committed to reducing the number of traffic fatalities on Oregon roads by funding saturation traffic enforcement operations and promoting driver education programs. The Coos Bay Police Department will continue with saturation traffic enforcement activities during the month of March, specifically on days around the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. St. Patrick’s Day celebrations often include various shades of green, shamrocks, and light-hearted festivities. However, St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest days for drunk driving. Don’t let tragedy overshadow the celebration. Arrange for a designated driver if your celebration will include alcohol. It’s a simple step that can save lives. Remember, once you start drinking, you can’t accurately judge your impairment. If you host a party, you can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you serve ends up in an impaired-driving crash. Offer to let guests sleep on a couch or even the floor, offer Taxi rides, or collect keys to keep inebriated guests from recklessly leaving.
