News release CCSO.  The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is proud of the actions of one of its deputy sheriffs and his wife for their response at the scene of a fatal car crash they came upon while off duty traveling home from Roseburg. Press Release from the Oregon State Police:  “On October 22, 2017 at about 3:10 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers from the Roseburg Area Command responded to Highway 42 just west of Camas Valley near mile post 51 for a report of a single vehicle versus pedestrian crash. “The preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2008 Ford Edge SUV, operated by Langlois Oregon resident Paul Arnoldi was traveling westbound at this location and for unknown reasons, left the roadway, striking a male pedestrian who was standing off the roadway taking photos. The pedestrian was identified as 61 year old North Bend resident Donald Dickinson. Dickinson was transported to Mercy Medical Center of Roseburg where he was later pronounced deceased. “Arnoldi was transported to Mercy Medical for serious injuries and later transported by air to Sacred Heart of Springfield. “OSP was assisted at the scene by Camas Valley Fire, Tenmile Fire, Douglas Fire District 2 and ODOT.” Information was received by the Sheriff’s Office denoting the actions of Deputy Mark Mahlum and Jennifer Mahlum at the scene of the above described crash scene.   Deputy Mahlum and his family, to include a child, were returning to Coos County after shopping in Roseburg.  The Mahlum’s happened upon the scene of the crash and took action.  Jennifer and Mark Mahlum without hesitation began assessing the scene, and comforting the driver and passenger of the vehicle and the pedestrian who had been struck.  Sheriff Craig Zanni commends both Deputy Mahlum and his wife Jennifer for their efforts in giving aid and comfort to the involved people. Deputy Mark Mahlum is a deputy sheriff working in the Corrections Division.  Deputy Mahlum has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2012.  He has prior service with the Coquille Police Department and before that the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.  Deputy Mahlum is a United States Marine Corps veteran.  Jennifer Mahlum works with Coos County Community Corrections.
