Unlawful Cutting of Cedar on BLM Lands

Summary: Coos County Man Arrested with Stolen Chainsaw after Unlawfully Cutting Cedar on BLM Property. On January 15th, 2024, around 8:15 am, the Coos County Dispatch Center received a report of a red Ford F-150 with a large load of cedar bolts and a chainsaw in the bed, parked near Highway 42 and Big Creek Road in Myrtle Point. Sergeant J. Boswell began driving his patrol truck to the area to investigate. While en route to the area, Sergeant Boswell passed the red truck driving in the opposite direction. Sergeant Boswell got behind the suspect vehicle and immediately noticed that there was not a visible permit on the wood products. Sergeant Boswell stopped the suspect vehicle after the driver failed to maintain his lane while going around a turn. The driver of the truck, Jesse Chamley (44), initially stated that the wood products were from private property. During a thorough investigation, Sergeant Boswell learned that Mr. Chamley had unlawfully cut and transported the cedar from BLM property without a permit. The wood taken was approximately ½ a cord with a value of more than $100.00. Additionally, the chainsaw that was located in the bed of the truck was reported stolen out of the Coquille area. The owner of the chainsaw will be contacted and the chainsaw will be returned. Sergeant Boswell arrested Mr. Chamley for the crimes of Theft 2 and Unlawful Cut and Transport of Minor Forest Products. Mr. Chamley was transported to the Coos County Jail by Deputy B. Freerksen where he was booked and processed.

DWS Wildwood Rd. at Hwy. 101
CCSO release – Date/Time: January 14th, 2024, around 1:19 pm; Case #: 202400001131; Classification: Driving While Suspended; Location: Wildwood Road and Highway 101, Coos County; Suspect(s): Jeffrey Ross (41). Summary: Coos County Man Arrested for Driving While Suspended. Transferred to Douglas County Deputies for Felony Case in their Jurisdiction. On January 14th, 2024, around 1:19 pm, Deputy M.R. Smith observed Jeffrey Ross (41) driving a black Toyota Camry on Wildwood Road near Highway 101. Deputy Smith had been trying to locate Mr. Ross for a Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended crime that he observed on December 24th, 2023, while he was off-duty in the Coos Bay Safeway parking lot. Deputy Smith activated his patrol vehicle’s lights and sirens in an attempt to stop Mr. Ross. Mr. Ross finally came to a stop after initially failing to yield to Deputy Smith. Mr. Ross was taken into custody for Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended and placed in the back of Deputy Smith’s patrol vehicle. Douglas County Patrol Deputies arrived on the scene and interviewed Mr. Ross regarding an incident in their County. Due to the seriousness of the crimes in Douglas County exceeding those in Coos County, Mr. Ross was taken into custody by Douglas County Deputies and taken to the Douglas County Jail.
