On January 2nd, 2024, around 3:30 pm, Coos County Dispatch received a 911 call requesting a welfare check for a man, Evan Davis (79), at a residence on Cape Arago Highway. Deputy B. Freerksen responded to the residence and spoke to a concerned neighbor worried about Evans’ well-being. Deputy Freerksen could see that the residence’s roof was falling inward, and when he spoke with Evan, he became more concerned about his physical and emotional well-being. It appeared Evan had no heat in his home, among other serious concerns. Deputy Freerksen continued ensuring Evan was cared for and got him the necessary resources before transporting him to Bay Area Hospital for evaluation. On January 3rd, 2024, Deputy Freerksen continued his work to ensure Evan’s ongoing care. He was able to contact Evan’s family in California and explain the concerns he had with them. Evan’s family expressed genuine surprise over the circumstances. Through Deputy Freerksen’s hard work and concern for the members of this community, Evan agreed to reunite with his family and move to California to be in a safer environment with them. Good work, Deputy Freerksen! This act and going the extra mile embodies what we strive for at the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.
Domestic Violence, Lee Valley Rd., Coquille
CCSO release – Date/Time: January 2nd, 2024, around 6:40 pm; Case #: 202400000125; Classification: Domestic Violence; Location: Lee Valley Road, Coquille; Suspect(s): Brandon Layfield (27). Summary: Coos County Man Arrested After Domestic Violence Incident. On January 2nd, 2024, around 6:40 pm, Coos County Dispatch received a 911 call for a disturbance at a residence on Lee Valley Road just outside Coquille. Dispatch was informed that the victim had locked herself in a room after being hit several times and that the suspect, Brandon Layfield (27), had a firearm in his possession. Deputy Z. Smith and Sergeant S. Moore responded to the residence assisted by Coquille Police Department. Deputy Smith swiftly took Mr. Layfield into custody and safely removed him from the home, securing him in the back of his patrol vehicle. Sergeant Moore and Deputy Smith thoroughly investigated the events that had transpired and ensured the safety of the victim. Mr. Layfield was arrested for Domestic Assault, Strangulation, Menacing, and Harassment. Deputy Smith transported him to the Coos County Jail where he remains in custody pending his initial appearance in court.
