Boating Class for Kids

Marine Division attends Boating Safety Class for Kids, sponsored by the Ten Mile Lake Yacht Club. On August 4, 2023, the Ten Mile Lake Yacht Club hosted a boating safety class for kids on Ten Mile Lake. Coos County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division Deputy R. Baker attended and assisted with the class. Deputy Baker handed out several safety items to the attendees, including wristbands and whistles, as you should always have your whistle handy when navigating waterways. The Sheriff’s Office Marine Division would like to remind those on the water that kids 12 and under must always wear life jackets.
Assault by the Bay
CCSO release – Date / Time: August 4, 2023 @ 10:15 p.m.; Case Number(s): 2023-00023750; Classification: Assault IV (D); Location: Bay (Beach) near Cape Arago and Wisconsin; Suspect(s): Gregory A. Jones (41). Report of an assault in progress near Bay leads to man’s arrest on a charge of assault IV domestic. On August 4th, 2023, at 10:15, the Coos County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received a report of an assault occurring in the brush, near the Bay, with the closest intersection reported for reference as Cape Arago Hwy and Wisconsin Street in Coos Bay. A Sheriff’s Deputy responded and, after arriving, could hear a woman yelling, “He is killing me.” The Deputy ran through the brush toward the bay, searching for the woman, and ultimately located her being held against her will in a makeshift hut near the water’s edge. The Deputy got the woman to safety and placed the man, identified as Gregory A. Jones (41), under arrest for assault IV domestic. Mr. Jones was transported to the Coos County Jail, where he was booked and remains in custody.
Attacked a Business Owner
CCSO release – Date / Time: August 5, 2023, at 5:52 p.m.; Case Number(s): 2023-00023830; Classification: Burglary II, Criminal Trespass I, Menacing, DOC II; Location: 61229 Hwy 101, Coos Bay, OR 97420; Suspect(s): James A. Gibbs Jr. (43); Man arrested south of Coos Bay after attempting to attack a business owner. On August 5th, 2023, at 5:52 p.m., the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a disturbance occurring at 61229 Hwy 101, just south of Coos Bay. The caller reported being attacked by a man who unlawfully entered his shop. The man then fled on foot, northbound on U.S. Hwy 101. A Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the area and located the man on U.S. Hwy 101, a short distance from where the incident occurred. The man, who identified himself as “James like in the Bible,” was irate and would not cooperate with the deputy. As a result of the investigation, “James” was arrested on Burglary II, Criminal Trespass I, Menacing, and Disorderly Conduct II charges. “James” was transported to jail on the above charges to obtain his identity. After being booked and fingerprinted, the subject was identified as James A. Gibbs Jr. (45). Mr. Gibbs information was updated, and he is currently in custody.
