News release from the Newport Police Dept. On October 15, 2014 at 8:56 a.m., Newport Police Officers responded to a single-vehicle traffic crash on NW Oceanview Drive at NW 33rd Street. The vehicle traveled off the roadway and approximately 25 feet down an embankment. Officers arrived on scene to find a 2000 Honda Accord over the embankment on the west side of NW Oceanview Drive. The impact of the crash caused extensive damage to the vehicle. The investigation revealed that Casey B. Derschon, age 19 of Newport, was traveling south on NW Oceanview Drive, approaching NW 33rd Street. It was raining heavily, and there was standing water on the roadway. When Derschon tried to avoid the standing water, his vehicle hydroplaned and went over the embankment. The Newport Fire Department, along with PacWest Ambulance personnel, arrived on scene. Derschon was able to exit his vehicle, but could not climb up the steep embankment. Fire personnel, using a rope and rescue basket, safely retrieved Derschon. He was transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital for apparent minor injuries. Northwest Oceanview Drive was reduced to one lane of travel for approximately one hour.
