News release from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Office. On August 22, 2015 at approximately 4:57pm, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic crash in the 600 Block of E. Eckman Creek Road, Waldport, Oregon. Upon arrival, deputies learned the driver of the vehicle, 37 year old Zachary John Pedro, and the two passengers, 32 year old Mandi Lee Sagraves and 36 year old Phillip Ross Olson, all three of Waldport, were being treated for serious injuries by fire and rescue personnel. All three occupants were transported by ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport. The Lincoln County Major Crash Team was dispatched to the scene to assist with the investigation. Collision Reconstructionists determined the vehicle, a black 1999 four-door Volkswagon Jetta operated by Pedro, was traveling northbound on E. Eckman Creek Road and entered a curve too fast for conditions sending it into a yaw condition in which the driver had no control over the vehicle, which began a lateral slide. The vehicle struck an address sign post before impacting an embankment where it came to rest. The vehicle sustained extensive driver side damage as a result of the impact. The front seat passenger, Sagraves, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the impact and was forced through the driver’s side door window where she came to rest on the ground between the embankment and vehicle. The driver, Pedro, appeared to have been using a seatbelt and remained in the vehicle, as did Olson who was positioned in the back seat. The driver’s side-curtain airbag was the only active restraint to deploy during the crash. Investigators learned Pedro was airlifted from Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis due to the extent of his injuries. Olson was later transported by ambulance from Newport to Good Samaritan Hospital as well. Sagraves remained in the Newport Hospital for treatment. On August 23, 2015, Zachary Pedro succombed to his injuries at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 7:46pm. Phillip Olson was still listed in critical condition and Mandi Sagraves was listed in stable condition. Vehicle speed and alcohol impairment are believed to be contributing factors of the traffic crash. The investigation is still active at this time. The Newport Police Department, Oregon State Police, Corvallis Police Department, Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, Central Oregon Coast Fire and Rescue, Yachats Fire and Rescue, and PacWest Ambulance assisted with the investigation.
