A town hall meeting will take place Monday evening, Oct. 20, in Newport, to discuss the recent announcement by the US Coast Guard to close its Newport Aerial Facility by Nov. 30. State and congressional representatives, and Oregon’s governor, have all come out in opposition to the decision which would leave the Central Coast covered by the air stations at North Bend or Astoria. The Newport facility is located at the Newport Municipal Airport in South Beach. It is a day facility where a helicopter crew from North Bend travels to the Central Coast each day and is stationed. They return to North Bend in the evening. The 5:30 p.m. meeting will be held in the Commons Area of Oregon Coast Community College, 400 SE College Way, in South Beach.
