The Oregon Department of Revenue is echoing a warning to taxpayers from the IRS that certain individual taxpayer identification numbers (ITINs) will expire at the end of this year. The IRS is advising taxpayers to renew their ITINs before filing new returns, to prevent delays in processing or disallowance of certain tax credits. ITINs with the numbers 78 and 79 in the middle, and any ITINs that haven’t been used in the last three years, won’t be valid for the upcoming tax-return-filing season unless they’re renewed. “We have approximately 31,000 Oregonians filing returns with an ITIN each year,” said Megan Denison, policy and systems manager for the Personal Tax and Compliance Division. “We don’t want an expired ITIN to delay processing of a return, and we want to make sure that Oregonians are getting good information, straight from the IRS, about their ITINs.” All ITIN-related questions should be directed to the IRS. The Department of Revenue can’t help a taxpayer with the renewal process. You can contact the IRS through www.irs.gov or your local office.
