Chess Anyone?, July 20

CBPL release – Celebration International Chess Day July 20th at 6:30pm at a LIVE chess game where attendees become the pieces at the Coos Bay Fire Station at 450 Elrod Avenue. Participants of all ages are welcome to come in costume or borrow a costume from the Coquille Chess Club’s large collection. Each chess piece will be given toy or balloon swords to act out dramatic fight and death scenes. Then participants will be wheeled off the chess board with full sirens. No chess experience necessary. Expect paparazzi photographers-spectators are welcome! Those wishing to participate as pieces, come 15 minutes early. The event, which will be “better than Harry Potter chess” is part of the Coos Bay Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program. During the summer, the Library offers both a reading challenge and programming for all ages which encourage people to read, learn, connect and find their voice. Beginning June 19 and continuing through August 19, participants of any age can participate in the summer reading bingo challenge, earning badges and entry into prize drawings. Participants who register will get a special prize for entering. This year, people can participate either online or using a paper bingo sheet. Challenge registration is available on the Library’s website or at the Coos Bay Public Library.
